Speech News for the week of May 8

This week during my large group we read I Hear a Pickle (and Smell, See, Touch, and Taste It, Too!) by Rachel Isadora.  As you can see from the title it discusses all of our senses and things that we encounter each day that we can hear, see, smell, touch, taste.  They liked making the sounds or making sounds of approval and disapproval for some of the silly ones (brothers diaper or brothers smelly shoes).  J    After the story I had a mystery box that the students had to reach in, use their hands to feel an object and guess what they thought it was; then pull it out.  They loved seeing if their guesses were right or wrong.  We also talked about if an object could be talked about with other senses (ie. You can see and hear a bell; see and taste grapes).

The students also got to participate in a listen and move song (using our ears).  You had to listen to the music and the actions named.  The second round they just played the music and you had to remember what action went with that sound.   Here is a link to that video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j24_xH5uvdA

Talking about senses encourages the students to stop and think as well as use attribute words to describe things.  Try talking about what you hear, see, smell at your next dinner out or at home.
